By blowing up this detail to 8 x 9 meters and placing it into a large scale urban area its abstract quality seems dominant to human proportions when watched from closeby and the spectator will only perceive a colourful and dynamic composition of shapes and colours. It's only from a distance, as seen from the surrounding appartments, or the end of the alley, the image of people becomes apparent.
The title ‘The Dip’ refers to the phenomenon of the individual being submerged in the crowd. The individual submerged subjects here are the depicted figurative persons as well the abstract shapes; all subject to the same dipping dynamics.
‘The Dip´ also refers to the rich colour composition for which a brush has been ´dipped´ into paint for each brushstroke.
Finally the title refers to a Hip Hop dance move as the dynamic, colourful composition of the painting could be a full dancing crowd just like that, doing the dip.
